Located in the heart of the gorges, just a hundred meters from the village, the Moulin de la Malène is an emblematic place, deeply linked to family history. The adventure began in 1965, when “Papy” bought this mill. From the beginning, he had a very specific dream: to transform this place into a small hydroelectric power station. This project was no coincidence, because Papy was born in a hydroelectric power station, and the idea of reconnecting with this heritage was particularly close to his heart.
However, the beginnings were difficult. The same year of the purchase, a historic flood hit the mill. The water rose up to the roof, carrying everything in its path. A tree even got stuck there. Discouraged, Papy wondered why he had embarked on this adventure. Despite everything, he persevered. The work, which would last three years, was finally completed, and the hydraulic power station began to operate. Even today, we can still hear the gentle hum of this small power station, a living testimony to Papy's work and passion.
Curious and a pioneer, Papy worked near Alès and was inspired by a friend who rented canoes in Ardèche. In 1973, he launched the business at Moulin de La Malène with 6 canoes and 4 kayaks. The modest beginnings were marked by inventive logistics: a Citroën DS to transport customers and rudimentary equipment. The initial 8 km route (Moulin de La Malène → Cirque des Baumes) seemed audacious in a region of boatmen, but Papy's vision transformed the idea into a pillar of the Gorges du Tarn.
The history of the Moulin de la Malène: a spirit of innovation over the generations. Janot, just like his father before him, has always had an insatiable curiosity and a mind bubbling with ideas. An innovator at heart, he is constantly looking for new projects and solutions. He always has a project up his sleeve! The history of the Moulin is also a love story. First between Janot and Muriel who is a woman who actively participates in the good life of the village, tourism and her department. She shares with Janot a common vision: to preserve heritage while continuing to innovate. Their slogan: "They love Lozère and the people!”
Under their leadership, the company has experienced spectacular growth. What began in 1973 with just 6 canoes and 4 kayaks has become a real institution. Today, the Moulin offers 250 canoes, 150 kayaks, 2 rafts, 25 paddles and since 2023, 10 electric bikes welcoming visitors from all over the world to discover the wonders of the Tarn Gorges. Together, they have given life to a second generation for the Moulin de la Malène. Charlie, Janot and Muriel's son, has naturally integrated into the family business, alongside his partner Fanny. Together, they continue the adventure while writing their own chapter. The family recently grew with the birth of Paul, their little boy.
Thus, the Moulin de la Malène continues to mix tradition and innovation, carried by a united family, looking towards the future, but always anchored in the authenticity of its roots.
