The History and Essence of Canoeing: A Millennial Discipline

💡 What is canoeing?

The canoe dates back thousands of years, initially used as a means of transportation by indigenous peoples in North America, Africa, and Oceania. Early boats were carved from tree trunks or made from bark, providing a means of navigating rivers and lakes for hunting, fishing, and trading. The Inuit, for example, developed the kayak, a closed version of the canoe that was perfectly suited to the icy waters of the Arctic. The word "canoe" comes from the Caribbean word "kenu," meaning "dugout" or canoe. This light, easy-to-handle craft was adopted in Europe in the 19th century as a recreational activity before becoming an official sport. Today, canoeing and kayaking encompasses a variety of activities, from calm water descents to whitewater racing and freestyle. In addition to the sporting aspect, canoeing offers a unique immersion in nature, allowing you to explore environments that are often inaccessible on foot. This sport combines strength, endurance and serenity, while promoting a deep connection with the water and the landscapes crossed. An activity that is both ancestral and modern, perfect for lovers of adventure and discovery.
